Mayer Brown appointed Elizabeth (Liz) Espín Stern as managing partner of the firm’s Washington DC office, effective September 13. Ms. Stern succeeds Raj De, who held the role since 2019 and was recently appointed to serve on the firm’s eight-person global Management Committee. Mr. De continues to lead the firm’s global Cybersecurity & Data Privacy practice and co-lead the National Security practice.

“Liz is an exceptional and visionary leader who is widely known as an innovator in pioneering initiatives to achieve client successes,” said Mayer Brown Chair Jon Van Gorp. “I’m confident her deep understanding of both the DC and the international business communities, coupled with her commitment to our core values of collegiality, teamwork and client service, will further expand the momentum of Raj’s outstanding work.”

Additionally, she is a member of the firm’s global Partnership Board and serves as a co-leader of the firm’s COVID-19 Global Response Team. In these roles, Ms. Stern coordinates with members of the firm’s leadership, as well as lawyers across four continents and multiple disciplines.

“I’m honored to lead the Washington DC office—the region is home to many of our clients’ most high-stakes and complex legal challenges and pivotal to our global strategy,” said Ms. Stern. “In collaboration with my talented colleagues in DC and around our great firm, I’m energized to deepen and expand our client relationships, attract top legal talent and enhance our brand of global excellence.”

Ms. Stern is consistently top-ranked by Chambers Global, Chambers USA, Who's Who Legal, The International Who's Who of Business Lawyers, among other national and local publications. She is a recipient of several National Law Journal awards, including “Outstanding Woman Lawyer,” “Crisis Leadership Trailblazer” and “Immigration Trailblazer.” She was also named a Washingtonian “Top Lawyer” and a Washington Business Journal “Woman Who Means Business.”
