Mayer Brown announced that Intellectual Property partner Melissa Anyetei (Chicago) has been named to Crain's Chicago Business’ list of 2020 “Notable Minorities in Accounting, Consulting and Law.” The list highlights 56 professionals who have overcome challenges and bias to rise to the top of their professions, promoted diversity and inclusion at their firms, and also assumed a leadership position outside their organization.

Ms. Anyetei focuses her practice on patent litigation, procurement, counseling and intellectual property transactions. She has extensive knowledge in a range of technical disciplines and regularly represents clients in federal district courts, before the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board.

The publication highlighted her role in securing a victory for the Automotive Coalition for Traffic Safety, a global coalition of the 18 largest automobile manufacturers in Europe, Asia and the US, in a dispute centered on the ownership of a patented touch-based technology that measures blood alcohol level when the driver’s finger touches the ignition button. Her victory ensures that this life-saving technology will be freely available to the automotive industry rather than a for-profit manufacturer.

Additionally, Ms. Anyetei was selected for her efforts in promoting inclusive policies, social justice and racial equality in the legal profession. As a member of the firm’s Project Equity leadership team, she contributes countless hours organizing the firm’s community outreach and pro bono initiatives directed to the advancement of social and racial justice. In addition, she is a founding member of Mayer Brown’s Associate Diversity Council and serves as the chair of Mayer Brown’s Black Lawyers affinity group, mentoring associates of color and leads initiatives to further drive a sense of community at the firm. She has taken an active role in organizations that share the same mission, including the Black Women Lawyers’ Association of Chicago, where she chaired the Mentorship Committee.
