Mayer Brown was named to The National Law Journal (NLJ)'s 2020 “Pro Bono Hot List" for its success in several major pro bono initiatives. The list recognizes law firms and lawyers who are “dedicated to making a monumental impact on the lives of those in need and have taken on some of the biggest issues of our time.” Mayer Brown is one of the 18 firms across the US to be selected to the list.

The publication highlighted Mayer Brown’s major pro bono wins and involvement in high-impact cases in 2019, including:

  • Obtaining a preliminary injunction against the US government and its decision to terminate temporary protected status for nearly 60,000 Haitians legally residing in the US.
  • Securing a release for a client serving a life sentence for joyriding under California’s Three Strikes law.
  • Representing asylum seekers on the US-Mexico border and challenging a new administration policy that effectively stripped these asylum seekers of their right to access the US asylum process. In November 2019, the firm secured a preliminary injunction, which will ensure that approximately 26,000 migrants will have a chance to have their asylum claims heard.
  • Securing a nationwide preliminary injunction against a proposed United States Citizenship and Immigration Services rule that made it harder for immigrants to qualify for fee waivers in the naturalization process.

Ward Johnson, the lead counsel in the California’s Three Strikes law case, told the NLJ that the most satisfying aspect of achieving a victory in the pro bono case was securing his client’s freedom, thus exposing the injustice of the Three Strikes law. Pro bono work is a “chance to make courts, colleagues and the public see issues in a new way,” he said.

This recognition further highlights Mayer Brown’s commitment and innovative approach to pro bono work. It marks the second time in the past four years that Mayer Brown has been named to the NLJ’s “Pro Bono Hot List.”
