US Womens National Soccer Team Landmark Win for Equal Pay

Share

Mayer Brown recently obtained a landmark settlement for the players on the US Women’s National Soccer Team in their equal-pay lawsuit against the US Soccer Federation. The settlement includes the first commitment from a major US sports federation to pay female and male athletes equally. This equal-pay case has spurred a movement for equal pay and working conditions for other women’s teams across the globe. As reported by The New York Times, “[i]n recent years, players, teams and even athletes in other sports … have reached out to the US players and their union for guidance in efforts to win similar gains in pay and working conditions. Many of those players and teams have succeeded in winning major gains — Norway, Australia and the Netherlands are among the countries whose soccer federations have committed to closing the pay gap between men and women …”

Join us for a discussion between our partner Nicole Saharsky, lead appellate counsel for the USWNT players, and Liz Stern, our Washington DC office managing partner, on how the team achieved this unprecedented result. Nicole will explain what prompted the players to file suit, describe some of the twists and turns along the way (both in court and out of court), and explain how the team put together a winning appellate strategy – one that allowed the players to settle the case on very favorable terms even though they lost summary judgment.  Join us for a behind the scenes look at this incredible case.

The discussion will be followed by an audience Q&A.
