James Clarke

James Clarke is an export, trade and commodity finance lawyer with particular experience in the emerging markets. He advises commercial banks, private credit funds, commodity traders, multilateral development banks, DFIs and export credit agencies on a wide variety of trade and export finance products, including PXFs, borrowing base facilities, prepayment facilities and buyer-credit export finance facilities.

James has completed two secondments with a major trade finance bank’s trade and treasury services team, as well as a secondment to another bank’s export finance team. James has also spent time in Dubai gaining experience in Sharia compliant financings.

• Advising African Export Import Bank in relation to a USD 152m facility agreement to African Medical Centre of Excellence Limited for the financing of the construction and operation of a hospital in Abuja, Nigeria, in partnership with King’s College London (Infrastructure Finance Deal of the Year | Global Banking & Markets: Africa Awards 2025).*
• Acting for Deutsche Bank on a EUR 170m sustainability-linked AfDB-covered financing to Mota-Engil Africa.*
• Advising Standard Chartered Bank and the Islamic Corporation for the Insurance of Investment and Export Credits (ICIEC) on the EUR 103m Islamic financing to the Republic of Senegal, which is covered by ICIEC’s Non-Honoring of Sovereign Financial Obligation.*
• Advising the Lenders on a MIGA-covered facility to an African sovereign to finance the import of certain medical supplies and foodstuffs.*
