Paul Whitfield-Jones is counsel in the International Trade group, based out of London. He focuses on regulatory compliance, transactional advice and investigations in the areas of economic sanctions, export controls, anti-corruption, foreign direct investment and money laundering. Paul has advised clients in a broad array of sectors, including defence, space, energy, finance, insurance, transport and engineering.
Paul advises clients on developing and testing compliance programmes; designing and delivering training; conducting investigations and submitting disclosures; liaising with regulators and supporting licence applications; and advising on complex transactions. He has represented clients in matters involving the Export Control Joint Unit (ECJU), the Office of Financial Sanctions Implementation (OFSI), HM Revenue & Customs, the Investment Security Unit, the US Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), the US Departments of Commerce and State.
Paul’s experience includes a secondment into the group export controls team of a major defence company, during the term of a Consent Agreement with the US State Department. He is an active participant in the Export Group for Aerospace, Defence and Dual-Use (EGADD), where he supports training initiatives and has been a regular speaker at EGADD training events.
Paul joined Mayer Brown in 2018.

- Advising a major US engineering company on UK foreign direct investment issues in connection with an acquisition, including submitting a notification to the UK Investment Security Unit.
- Advising an international engineering company on the seizure of goods by UK Border Force.
