Please join us for a conversation with Professor Pierre-Hugues Verdier of the University of Virginia School of Law, and author of the book, Global Banks on Trial: US Prosecutions and the Remaking of International Finance, Oxford University Press, published in 2020. This book is a groundbreaking account of US enforcement actions against global banks, how they were enabled by US power over international finance, and the controversies and reforms that they have brought about. Professor Verdier will discuss his research into four areas key area of the US enforcement campaign against global banks: benchmark manipulation, tax evasion, sanctions violations, and sovereign debt. 

Professor Verdier will be joined in conversation by Joydeep Sengupta, counsel in Mayer Brown's Compliance, Regulatory and Investigations practice in Paris, who has worked on some of the most significant cross-border investigations in Europe involving global banks, with an introduction by Elizabeth Stern, Managing Partner of the Mayer Brown Washington, DC Office. 

Concluding remarks will be given by Gina Parlovecchio and Marc Cohen. Ms Parlovecchio is a partner in Mayer Brown's New York office and a member of the global White Collar Defense & Compliance and Regulatory & Investigations practices; she served as an Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) in the US Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York (EDNY), where she was the chief of the office’s International Narcotics and Money Laundering Section (INMLS). Mr. Cohen is a partner in Mayer Brown’s Washington DC office where he regularly represents global financial services firms on litigation, banking and securities, regulatory, enforcement, legislative, and strategic counseling matters.
