The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a significant increase in the number of new whistleblower complaints. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) recently reported a 35% surge in complaints as compared to the mid-March to mid-May period last year, according to Reuters. As companies respond to this uptick in complaints, they should consider how best to refine and refocus their compliance programs and investigations functions to encourage and protect whistleblowers in a work-from-home environment and remediate problems that may arise during an economic downturn.
