Enhancing the Skills You Need to Succeed

Reflecting this strong commitment to ongoing improvement in individual and team performance, our support constantly evolves to reflect changes in the legal profession. To help you navigate your career, expand your skills and deliver the best client service possible, we offer extensive learning and development resources tailored to every experience level and each region, including:

Training

We believe the informal training that results from working on client matters alongside more experienced lawyers is invaluable to every lawyer’s development and growth. We supplement this with formal legal and professional skills training through in-person and on-demand programs, practice group meetings and self-study opportunities.

Our goal is to help you enhance a broad range of skills ranging from legal writing and editing, to oral advocacy and case management, to business development and people management. We also provide training to keep you abreast of current developments and unique issues of interest to your particular area.

We offer ample opportunities to network across offices and practices, and we host global programs designed to streamline the transition of newly promoted partners into their roles and strengthen critical leadership and management skills. International secondment programs also provide a unique opportunity to expand and enhance your skills and deepen your knowledge in a new region.

Coaching and Mentoring

To help you identify and achieve your career goals, we provide one-on-one and group coaching in areas such as career and business planning, maximizing mentor relationships, transitioning to and from leave, time management and effective communication.

We are committed to helping new lawyers transition to the firm, guiding mid-level lawyers in strategizing about career goals and working closely with senior lawyers approaching partnership. In addition, we offer formal and informal mentoring opportunities to provide valuable guidance and support as you integrate into Mayer Brown and progress in your career.

Our one-firm culture, integrated across all practices and regions, is characterized by integrity, team spirit and a commitment to delivering excellence in everything we do.

I’m a big believer in teamwork and collaboration. That’s what drives our firm’s success, so I love being part of a team of lawyers who support, encourage and push each other to be the very best we can be.”
-- Jean-Pierre Lee, Partner, Paris

“I joined Mayer Brown Mexico and started with a secondment in the Houston’s office right after studying for my Masters in the US. This provided me with the opportunity to apply the knowledge acquired in the prior year and gave me the chance to work on very interesting deals and transactions under US. law. It was a challenging experience to be working outside my country but the exposure and learning opportunities that I gained make it worth it.”
-- Mary Carmen Villagomez, Associate, Mexico City

The guiding purpose of our pro bono program is to attack systemic problems, locally and globally. We strive to help individuals rebuild and restore their lives, and we help industries and organizations address underlying issues and challenges. Our work ranges from helping nonprofit organizations fulfill their missions to addressing issues of prisoners’ rights, asylum, immigration and refugee law. Learn more about our pro bono work.

“Our pro bono program runs the gamut from individual representation of low-income individuals and the organizations that serve them, to high impact litigation and transactional matters. The program provides support, structure, and valuable skills development opportunities, while also allowing lawyers to pursue issues that they feel passionately about and to feel a part of their communities.”
