Overview
Rory Schneider is a Litigation partner in Mayer Brown’s New York office. Rory has considerable experience in both the trial and appellate stages of litigation. Rory has worked on more than a dozen jury trials, advising clients on complex legal issues and drafting key filings such as motions in limine, motions for directed verdict, jury instructions and motions for new trial. Rory has also drafted winning appellate briefs in a multitude of courts, including the Second, Seventh, Ninth, Tenth and Eleventh Circuit Courts of Appeal as well as several state appellate courts.
Rory’s litigation experience covers a wide range of disputes, including complex consumer product liability and financial matters. On behalf of securities issuers, underwriters and trustees, Rory has litigated a host of legal and factual issues surrounding the treatment of residential mortgage-backed securities. Rory has particularly deep knowledge regarding disputes arising out of corporate transactions, regularly consulting with transactional counsel in connection with the negotiation and execution of M&A agreements in order to avoid post-transaction issues. His experience in post-transaction disputes includes the representation of a multinational research-and-development firm in efforts to recover tens of millions of dollars from various entities following its discovery of a fraud at an acquisition target, and the defense of a multinational chemical company in an international arbitration arising out of its sale of a subsidiary to a competitor.
Rory devotes a substantial amount of time to pro bono matters as well. Among other things, Rory has drafted amicus briefs in cases addressing the rights of same-sex couples and immigrants, successfully challenged the removal of a Sudanese refugee seeking asylum in the United States, and overturned on appeal a criminal defendant’s sentence as unconstitutional and secured a materially lower one on remand.
Prior to joining Mayer Brown in 2014, Rory served as a law clerk to Judge Marjorie O. Rendell of the Third Circuit Court of Appeals. Rory also spent a year as a litigation associate at another international law firm. Rory received his JD summa cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania Law School, where he was a comments editor on the Law Review.
