Arsen Kourinian is a partner in Mayer Brown’s Los Angeles office and a member of the Cybersecurity & Data Privacy practice. He is a certified data privacy professional and holds the fellow of information privacy (FIP) and certified information privacy professional (CIPP) credentials through the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) for the United States (CIPP/US), Europe (CIPP/E), Canada (CIPP/C), and Asia (CIPP/A). He also holds the IAPP certified information privacy manager (CIPM) designation and Privacy Management Professional certificate through OneTrust. Arsen further helps educate the next generation of data privacy professionals by serving as the chair of the CIPP/US Exam Development Board.
Arsen is a thought leader in data privacy and adtech, having published many articles regarding nuanced issues in these fields, presenting on these topics for numerous organizations and trade association groups, and working with companies to shape the data protection landscape in this ever-evolving area.
As a global data privacy counselor, Arsen advises multinational corporations regarding compliance with data privacy laws in the United States, European Union, United Kingdom, Africa, Middle East, and Asia. When advising clients regarding compliance with these laws, he provides practical and operational guidance on how to harmonize these laws and standards into uniform policies, procedures, and practices. Arsen regularly helps clients with privacy policies, adtech standards and data flows, cross-border data transfers, data privacy and security due diligence assessments for mergers and acquisitions, vendor contracts, privacy by design, and human resources data.
In addition to data privacy counseling, Arsen is a trusted member of the cybersecurity community and receives briefings from the Federal Bureau of Investigation regarding cyber threats to the private sector. Arsen’s work in this area includes helping companies respond to security incidents and handling the domestic and international breach notification obligations. He has also conducted over 300 internal investigations related to identity theft and fraud for financial institutions and handled the regulatory reporting arising from these incidents.
Arsen also advises companies’ officers and directors regarding their obligations under data privacy and security laws. This includes training boards and C-suite on implementing internal controls in their companies to ensure readiness to address data privacy and security laws and incidents, preparing incident response plans specifically tailored for officers and directors, and improving companies’ cyber score for environmental, social, and governance (ESG) ratings.
