Overview

Allison Aviki is a trial lawyer who represents clients in complex copyright, trademark, trade dress, trade secret, and unfair competition disputes in courts across the country. She is known for her work in high-stakes copyright litigation involving media, entertainment, publishing, technology companies, social media, content ownership and distribution, music licensing, streaming platforms, and artificial intelligence. Allison serves as Global Co-Leader of Mayer Brown’s Intellectual Property practice and is also the Managing Partner of the firm’s New York Office.

Allison’s practice focuses on helping clients navigate cutting-edge intellectual property disputes that sit at the intersection of law, business, and creative industries. She advises leading companies on copyright, platform liability, user-generated content, and other issues involving the creation, distribution, and monetization of digital content. Her work spans both traditional copyright litigation and rapidly evolving disputes involving generative AI and other emerging technologies.  

Experience

  • Represents Perplexity AI in a prominent generative AI copyright action involving multiple leading AI and technology companies, securing a favorable severance ruling establishing important limits on multi-defendant copyright litigation involving AI developers.
  • Represented Spotify in Eight Mile Style LLC and Martin Affiliated LLC v. Spotify USA Inc., securing complete summary judgment victories that defeated claims exceeding $100 million, preserved key protections under the Music Modernization Act, and resulted in dismissal of all claims asserted against Spotify.
  • Represents Meta Platforms in multiple high-profile copyright disputes involving music publishers and platform liability theories, including litigation concerning alleged infringement of hundreds of musical works through social media music libraries and user-generated content tools.
  • Served as a lead member of the litigation team defending Pandora Media in a series of closely watched copyright actions involving the licensing of comedy recordings. Helped secure dispositive victories and a favorable resolution preserving longstanding industry licensing practices.
  • Represents Hachette Book Group in copyright and artificial intelligence-related publishing disputes, obtaining dismissal of copyright and AI-related claims at the pleading stage and successfully defending bestselling authors and publishing properties against infringement allegations.
  • Represents Hachette Book Group in multiple related copyright litigations, defeating a preliminary injunction seeking to halt publication of a now bestselling novel.
  • Represents Spotify in putative class-action litigation involving allegations of fraudulent streaming activity and royalty dilution.
