Mayer Brown launches first-of-its-kind Technology General Counsel in Residence program

Mayer Brown recently launched its Technology General Counsel in Residence (TGCR) program. This entrepreneurial role, a first-of-its-kind at a law firm, is designed as a short-term position for seasoned technology company general counsels (GCs). TGCR is modeled after entrepreneur in residence positions traditionally found at venture capital firms.

Mayer Brown notched its first success with technology veteran Beth Stevens, who most recently served as the General Counsel of ONE, a fintech company backed by Ribbit Capital and Walmart. As the firm’s inaugural participant, Beth served in an advisory role—providing firm lawyers with insider knowledge on key topics of importance to technology companies and their GCs; consulting with various departments on technology-related business partnerships with clients; building training programs surrounding substantive developments in technology-related areas of law; and facilitating proprietary connections with third party organizations. Beth joined Sword Health this month.

“We are constantly looking to innovate and strengthen our client relationships, and our growing work with technology clients made this the perfect time to launch the TGCR,” said Raj De, a member of the firm’s global Management Committee.

Nina Flax, a partner in the firm’s Northern California Corporate & Securities practice who designed the TGCR program, added, “We happened to find the perfect fit candidate in Beth. She added immediate value to firm lawyers and clients through her unique perspective and critical insight into forward-looking business issues for early stage and venture capital companies.”

“As a TGCR, I broadened my perspective of—and gained a stronger appreciation for—the range of complex issues firm lawyers tackle across disciplines and how they intertwine to achieve a wholistic solution for clients,” said Beth.
