Mayer Brown supports Afghan Pro Bono Initiative

Firm joins 13 other law firms to help deliver pro bono partnership between Refugee Legal Support (RLS) and Safe Passage International

Mayer Brown is proud to support the Afghan Pro Bono Initiative, a new project spearheaded by the Refugee Legal Support (RLS) and Safe Passage International to provide Afghan refugees with legal representation. The firm is one of 14 law firms to partner with the charities to help deliver the initiative.

"This project will be a life line for hundreds of Afghan people, who simply have nowhere else to turn," said Mayer Brown's London Head of Pro Bono and CSR, Mehreen Malik. "Our lawyers have undergone specialist training and are ready to take on cases to help those fleeing the Taliban. In the months that follow, we also look forward to expanding our commitment to help meet the overwhelming demand for legal assistance.”

Since the Taliban takeover in Afghanistan, RLS and Safe Passage International have been inundated with hundreds of enquiries from people desperately in need of legal advice, support, and representation as they try to find safe routes to sanctuary and reunite with family members in the UK.

The initiative will help to meet those challenges by providing pro bono legal advice and representation, assisting people with their application to be reunited with their family in the UK, helping with access to the Afghan Relocation and Assistance Policy (ARAP) scheme, and providing information on the Afghan Citizens Resettlement Scheme.

Mayer Brown volunteers, supervised by two specialist immigration lawyers and supported by an experienced project coordinator, will provide Afghan people with much-needed pro bono advice alongside 13 other law firms.

The full list of law firms involved in the initiative includes Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld, Allen & Overy, Ashurst, Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton, Clyde & Co, Debevoise & Plimpton, Gibson Dunn & Crutcher, Eversheds Sutherland, Hogan Lovells, Mayer Brown, Orrick, Reed Smith, Ropes & Gray, and Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom (UK) LLP.
