Ying-Zi Yang is counsel in Mayer Brown’s New York office and a member of the Intellectual Property and Life Sciences practice. She is a PhD biochemist with an undergraduate degree in biochemical engineering and extensive biotechnology experience. She focuses her practice on patent litigation and counseling. She has participated in a number of Hatch-Waxman litigation and trial teams and ITC Section 337 Actions. Her patent counseling practice include rendering opinions relating to the infringement, validity, and enforceability of patents.

In addition, Ying-Zi has experience in IP due diligence assessments relating to acquisitions and mergers, pre-suit investigation, and FDA regulations, including interviewing inventor and witness; assessing patent ownership; preparing timelines and presenting likely scenarios; and providing advice regarding Orange Book listings, patent term extensions, and regulatory exclusivities. 

Ying-Zi is a registered patent attorney. She has experience in patent prosecution in various technology fields, including biotechnology and chemicals. Before becoming a lawyer, she was a longtime in-house patent agent in a large biopharmaceutical company where she managed a large U.S. and foreign patent portfolio.

Before her legal career, Ying-Zi studied the etiology of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD), identified new avenues for AD therapeutics, published on the mechanism and treatment of malarial infections, neurosteroid metabolism, and the mechanism and action of nuclear receptors at the DNA level.
