William (Bill) R. Siegel is an associate in the Intellectual Property group of Mayer Brown’s Chicago office. Bill has experience in a wide range of intellectual property matters covering a variety of industries.

With extensive experience in trademark prosecution and brand management, clients turn to Bill for counsel on their global trademark, including:

• Clearance, preparation, prosecution, and maintenance of domestic and foreign trademarks and copyrights
• Registering and safeguarding trademarks within the United States and globally
• Defense and enforcement of trademarks before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB) of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)
• Domain name disputes under Uniform Domain-Name Dispute-Resolution Policy (UDRP)
• Copyright protection, registration, and enforcement

Prior to joining Mayer Brown, Bill worked for an IP boutique law firm for over ten years focusing primarily on patent and trademark prosecution. Bill’s patent experience includes prosecution before the USPTO, defending and enforcing patents in proceedings at the U.S. Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), and litigation of patents in U.S. Federal Courts and at the International Trade Commission (ITC).

Prosecution

Manage global trademark portfolios, including drafting trademark clearance opinions, filing, prosecuting, and maintaining U.S. and foreign marks.
Advise clients regarding worldwide trademark strategy.
Correspond with foreign counsel regarding international watch notices, oppositions, and responses to office actions.
Respond to office actions in ex parte reexamination proceedings before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

Litigation

Advise clients regarding the likelihood of success in pursuing enforcement actions before the U.S. Trademark Trial and Appeals Board (TTAB) and U.S. Federal Courts.
Prosecute and defend trademark infringement claims in opposition and cancellation proceedings before the TTAB
Prosecute and defend numerous successful Uniform Domain-Name Dispute-Resolution Policy (UDRP) proceedings before the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO).

Transactional

Apply skills gained through the enforcement and procurement of Intellectual Property to due diligence and transactional matters.
