CHICAGO – Mayer Brown announced today that Greg Oguss has joined the firm in Chicago as a partner in its Corporate & Securities practice and Global Insurance Industry Group. Greg was previously global chief counsel for corporate development at Athene Holding Ltd., a subsidiary of Apollo Global Management, Inc.

“Greg is widely recognized as a leading legal advisor on commercial, legal strategy and regulatory matters related to cross-border insurance M&A, asset-intensive reinsurance and asset management opportunities across the US, Bermuda, Europe, and Asia,” said Stephen Rooney, a co-leader of Mayer Brown’s Global Insurance Industry Group. “He will be a great asset to our market-leading Insurance Industry Group, allowing us to continue to deliver the highest quality transactional advice to our clients.”

Greg advises multinational insurers, reinsurers and alternative asset managers on new business and back-book reinsurance, acquisitions, divestitures, investment management transactions, debt and equity investments, and domestic and international regulatory matters. He has significant experience in transactions at the convergence of insurance – particularly in the life and annuity sector – and alternative asset management, as well as with cross-border insurance M&A more broadly.

“Returning to private practice after serving for several years in an in-house role at a market leading retirement services provider, I am excited to bring my client-side perspective and close relationships with key market participants to Mayer Brown’s exceptional financial services transactional practice,” said Greg. “Mayer Brown is extremely well-positioned to help a diverse array of clients seeking to address retirement funding gaps across the US, the U.K., Europe, and Asia to achieve successful business outcomes. The firm’s reputation for delivering exceptional transactional and regulatory advice in innovative cross-border transactions around the globe is a strong fit for my practice.”

“We continue to prioritize the addition of high caliber lateral hires in our Chicago office to help us drive growth in our strategic areas,” said Joanna Horsnail, the managing partner of Mayer Brown’s Chicago office. “Greg is a terrific addition to our growing corporate insurance team and strengthens our ability to handle more complex reinsurance and M&A deals in the US and internationally.”
