LOS ANGELES – Mayer Brown announced today that Gabe Steffens has joined the firm in Los Angeles as a partner in its Real Estate and Real Estate Funds practices. Gabe was previously the global head of legal for Nuveen Real Estate and the general counsel of The Amherst Group.

“Recognized for his strategic insight and commercial acumen, Gabe brings a unique perspective shaped by his in-house leadership and extensive deal experience across asset classes and geographies,” said Brian Aronson, co-lead of Mayer Brown’s Real Estate practice. “He will be a great asset to our clients navigating complex, high-stakes real estate matters.”

Gabe is a highly accomplished transactional lawyer with over two decades of experience advising clients at the intersection of real estate and private equity. His practice spans complex joint ventures, acquisitions and dispositions, fund formation, and operating company investments and transactions. Gabe’s experience covers multiple sectors including industrial and logistics, housing, self-storage, office, retail, and various alternative asset classes.

Prior to joining the firm, Gabe served as general counsel for The Amherst Group, a leading alternative investor and operator in real estate, with a particular focus in single-family rental, and as global head of legal for Nuveen Real Estate, one of the world’s largest real estate investors and operators. In these roles, he oversaw legal strategy across multi-billion-dollar investment portfolios, led negotiations on marquee transactions, and advised C-suite executives and boards of directors on governance, compliance, and risk management.

“I am thrilled to join Mayer Brown, where I have had the privilege of working with many team members over the years,” said Gabe. “The firm’s depth of experience in real estate, fund formation, and its comprehensive capabilities across corporate, finance, tax, and regulatory work are an ideal match for my multi-disciplinary practice. I look forward to leveraging those capabilities and the firm’s geographic reach to bring truly integrated, best-in-class service to some of the most sophisticated players in the real estate and investment management industries.”

“Gabe is a terrific addition to both our national real estate as well as our California practices and strengthens our ability to lead negotiations on transformational deals,” said John Nadolenco, the managing partner of Mayer Brown’s Los Angeles office. “Many of our lawyers have worked across the table from Gabe on deals and consistently recognize his collaborative and client-centric approach.”
