Brian A. Bates

Brian Bates is Senior Counsel in Mayer Brown’s London office and a member of the Capital Markets practice. Brian represents clients in a wide range of financing transactions, including private placements of debt and equity, bank syndications, various bank finance products, high yield debt offerings and mezzanine and LBO financings. He has a practice advising non-U.S. entities seeking to make cross-border private placements of securities to U.S. and other large financial institutions and pension funds.

Brian has extensive experience in cross-border private placements, with particular experience representing the issuer, having represented issuers on approximately a third of the total cross-border U.S. private placement debt market throughout the course of the last several years. Chambers Global wrote that Brian “‘is a global leader in acting as issuer counsel for private placements,’ according to his clients. He has a wealth of experience advising European clients involved in private placement transactions in the US.”

Brian is the sole issuer-side member and co-chair of the Transactions process Management Committee of the American College of Investment Counsel (“ACIC”), which is responsible for the development of new model forms for the cross-border private placement market.

Brian is ranked as an Expert Consultant for Capital Markets: Debt by the IFLR1000. He has also been ranked by Chambers Global, Chambers Europe and Chambers UK for Capital Markets: Debt. Clients told Chambers UK that Brian’s “key strengths are his ability to draw on a wealth of experience, build rapport with clients quickly and provide commercial advice.” Brian was also ranked by The Legal 500 UK for Capital Markets: Debt.
