Mayer Brown was named among Law360’s 2023 “Practice Groups of the Year” in Banking, Project Finance, Tax and Transportation. The annual award series honors the lawyer teams behind “the litigation wins and major deals that resonated throughout the legal industry this past year.”

Banking

For five consecutive years, Mayer Brown has been named a “Banking Practice Group of the Year.” In the past year, the firm, representing more than half of the world’s biggest banks, played a pivotal role in numerous high-profile cases. This included persuading the Second Circuit to affirm the dismissal of claims under the Anti-Terrorism Act against HSBC and Credit Suisse, while also securing an opinion from New York’s highest court clarifying the responsibilities of trustees for residential mortgage-backed securities.

Project Finance

Mayer Brown’s projects and infrastructure team advised on a range of transactions over the past year that earned the titles of “first” or “biggest.” For example, the firm guided the financing for a Pennsylvania bridge replacement project and navigated a first-of-its-kind tax credit transfer transaction amid a renewable energy portfolio buy, securing the firm a spot among the “Project Finance Groups of the Year.”

Tax

Once again named a “Tax Group of the Year,” the team secured numerous local and global victories. These included a Washington state appellate court’s decision in a novel sales tax case, as well as facilitating an energy company’s $307 million merger, resulting in a business with a focus on exploration and production in Africa.

Transportation

The firm earned a “Transportation Group of the Year” designation for its work on multiple high-profile deals. Mayer Brown advised Wells Fargo Bank and J.P. Morgan Securities in a deal to underwrite $1.8 billion in private activity bonds to rebuild and maintain six bridges in Pennsylvania. The team also remains actively involved in Brightline, a privately funded high-speed passenger rail line in Florida.
