Brazil has finally adhered to the Madrid Protocol, and three of its resolutions regulating the new procedures come into force today – October 2, 2019. However, the practical effects of the Madrid Protocol will only begin on March 9, 2020, which is when the BPTO will actually make the relevant electronic systems available (with resolution No. 244 coming into force then), postponing the actual application of the Madrid Protocol until next year. This Legal Update summarizes some of the relevant aspects of the four resolutions.
