So You Want to Form a MSR Fund: Issues and Considerations

Investor interest in residential mortgage servicing rights (MSRs) remains high notwithstanding the headwinds faced by residential mortgage servicers, such as forbearance, record re-financings and increased natural disasters. Not all investors, however, want to own a mortgage servicer, and they increasingly look to alternative ways to participate in the servicing asset, such as private funds investing in excess servicing fees.
