Lauren Friedman has represented clients in several of the largest international arbitrations on record, including cases exceeding $1 billion in dispute. As leader of the firm’s International Arbitration (US) practice, Lauren represents clients across all sectors, with particular depth in energy, technology, and financial services industries, with a focus on international investment treaty and commercial arbitration. Across these industries, she advises and represents clients in complex contractual disputes arising under New York law and international law, often involving major projects and foreign investments. She has significant experience representing clients in disputes governed by other US laws and the laws of Latin American jurisdictions, practicing both in English and Spanish.

Over the course of her career, Lauren has represented clients in dozens of disputes under the rules of all major arbitral institutions, including ICSID, ICC, SIAC, ICDR, and LCIA, as well as in ad hoc arbitrations under the UNCITRAL Rules. She also represents parties in international litigation involving proceedings in foreign and domestic courts, including before the US federal and state courts and the Second Circuit.

Experiência

Investment Treaty Arbitration
  • Lead counsel to a major petrochemical company in a BIT dispute against a Middle Eastern State related to discriminatory taxes, with more than $600 million at issue.
  • Represented ConocoPhillips in a multibillion-dollar ICSID arbitration arising from the expropriation of hydrocarbon and refining assets in Venezuela resulting in an award of $8 billion.
  • Represented GDF Suez and Aguas de Barcelona in an ICSID arbitration against Argentina, resulting in a multimillion-dollar award in favor of the client.
  • Represented ConocoPhillips in a multimillion-dollar ICSID dispute arising from an expropriation of hydrocarbons resources in the Republic of Ecuador, resulting in an award of over $300 million.
