Matt has extensive experience navigating large-scale, multiyear antitrust disputes that can often involve multiple defendants and plaintiffs, millions of pages of discovery, tens or hundreds of depositions, and nine-figure damages claims. He has also briefed and argued successful motions at all stages in litigation, including dispositive motions, in both state and federal court. Behind the scenes, Matt regularly advises his clients regarding the antitrust implications of myriad business issues. He understands that effective representation in any antitrust matter requires a true understanding of not only the legal principles at issue but also the relevant facts, data, and the nature of his client’s business—and he dives deeply into each.
On the consumer privacy side, Matt is part of the Mayer Brown team that litigated several of the seminal cases brought under Illinois’ landmark Biometric Information Privacy Act (“BIPA”). He often represents technology companies in disputes that involve challenges to innovative and emerging technologies under BIPA and other state and federal consumer protection statutes.
Prior to joining Mayer Brown, Matt served as a law clerk to the Honorable Robert J. Conrad, Jr., US District Judge for the Western District of North Carolina, where he gained a wide array of both civil and criminal experience, saw numerous jury trials to verdict, and assisted Judge Conrad in appellate matters taken up while sitting by designation on the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.
Matt graduated magna cum laude from the Ohio State University Moritz College of Law, where he served as an editor of the Ohio State Law Journal (Law Review) and earned book awards for top grades in Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure, Constitutional Law, and Legal Writing.
