Ian Coles heads Mayer Brown's Africa and Mining practices and co-heads the Global Projects practice. He concentrates his practice on all aspects of bank and debt finance, ranging from projects and other structured finance to commodities financing and restructuring. He represents banks and other financial institutions, sponsors, and other participants in finance transactions throughout the world.

Ian joined Mayer Brown in 1981, becoming a partner in 1987 and is the author of numerous articles in connection with project finance.
- Advising Sumitomo Metals & Mining (acting in consortium with its partner, Sumitomo Corporation), on its US$1.2 billion acquisition of a minority shareholding in the Teck-owned, Quebrada Blanca Copper Project in Chile and advising SMM on the related US $2.5 billion project financing of the Quebrada Blanca phase 2 project.
- Advised Sumitomo in the initial stages of its potential acquisition of an interest in and development of a lithium-mining project in Argentina
- Advising the US government and Afghanistan Ministry of Mines on the development of the mining industry in Afghanistan (mineral reserves potentially valued in excess of US$ 3 trillion and include gold, copper, iron ore, lithium and rare earths) with particular emphasis on the tendering process, model mining agreements and suitability of the mining laws. This was recognised in Financial Times Innovative Lawyer Awards 2011 as a “Stand-out” firm for our work on this and awarded the “Infrastructure/ Energy Team of the Year” at the Lawyer Awards 2012.

- Represented the lending group in connection with the $425m of debt financing made available to Closed Joint Stock Company “Chukotka Mining and Geological Company”, a 75% owned Russian subsidiary of Bema Gold Corporation, for the development of the Kupol gold project in the Russian Far East.
- Advising the lenders on the $90 million financing of the Karchiga Project.
- Advised the lenders on a loan facility to Oriel Resources plc, a London based chrome and nickel mining and processing company for the Voskhod Chrome Project.
- Advising Chaarat Gold Holdings on an international tender for its gold processing plant and related infrastructure in the Kyrgyz Republic, including drafting a lump sum turnkey EPC contract for the project.
- Advised the finance parties generally on the corporate re-organisation and restructuring of the Endeavour Mining Group, including integration of new material subsidiaries as additional guarantors to the US$ 350m facility. The facility will be used to support gold mining operations in Ghana and Burkina Faso and develop exploration activities in the Ivory Coast, Mali and elsewhere. - Represented the arrangers in relation to US$ 88m senior debt facility made available to Bea Mountain Mining Corporation in relation to the New Liberty gold project. Won Development Funding Deal of the Year Award at Mines & Money Conference in London on 4 December 2013.
- Advised the MLAs in respect of the US$ 125m corporate revolving credit facility (and associated security) to the Dundee Group and advising re intercreditor relationship. Cross border involving Canada, Namibia, Armenia, Bulgaria, British Virgin Islands and the Netherlands.
- Advised Wolf on the project documents, planning and project financing for the construction and development of a tin and tungsten mine in Hemerdon, Devon, the first mine in the UK to be financed for several years. - Advised Nordic Mines in connection with the €53m financing of the development of the Laiva Gold Mine near Raahe, Finland.
