Originally launched in 2023 as first-of-its-kind, Mayer Brown’s program continues to expand

Mayer Brown announced today that Holly Hogan, a distinguished legal executive and former chief legal officer at Automattic Inc. (WordPress.com), has joined the firm in the San Francisco office as the latest participant in its pioneering Technology General Counsel in Residence (TGCR) program. Modeled after the entrepreneur-in-residence concept popular in venture capital, this innovative initiative brings seasoned technology general counsel into Mayer Brown for a short-term, high-impact residency.

Holly’s experience includes legal strategy, regulatory compliance, public policy, and corporate growth within the technology sector. At Automattic, she led global legal affairs and public policy, built and scaled high-performing legal teams, and navigated complex legal and regulatory challenges as the company scaled rapidly.

“We are thrilled to welcome Holly as our next Technology General Counsel in Residence,” said Nina Flax, partner in Mayer Brown’s Northern California office and architect of the TGCR program. “Holly’s deep experience at the intersection of law, technology, and business will provide our lawyers and clients with unique, practical insights and further strengthen our ability to serve technology clients in a rapidly evolving landscape.”

Raj De, a member of Mayer Brown’s global management committee, added, “Holly’s background as a legal leader at one of the world’s most innovative internet companies is exactly the kind of real-world, practical experience that makes the TGCR program so valuable. Her perspective will help us bridge the gap between in-house counsel and law firms, ensuring that our advice is not only technically sound but also actionable and aligned with the needs of today’s technology businesses.”

During her residency, Holly will collaborate with Mayer Brown’s lawyers across practice areas, advise on business strategy, help train associates, and provide a grounded understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing technology companies. She will also play a key role in mentoring lawyers and supporting the firm’s ongoing commitment to innovation and client service.

“I am excited to join Mayer Brown as the next Technology General Counsel in Residence,” Holly said. “This is a unique opportunity to share my experiences, learn from a world-class team, and help shape how law firms and in-house legal departments can work together to address the complex issues facing technology companies today.”
