Alys Jones is a senior associate in the Insurance & Reinsurance practice of the London office. She joined Mayer Brown in 2014, having previously worked for another international law firm.
Alys has advised in relation to a broad range of contentious and non-contentious matters. She is experienced in defending claims against professionals and advising insurers in relation to policy coverage issues and disputes under a variety of lines of insurance.
In particular, Alys is experienced in defending a wide range of professionals against third party claims, with a particular focus on accountants, lawyers, barristers, tax advisors and insolvency practitioners (both offshore and in the UK). These claims have involved complex corporate and property transactions, tax planning and tax mitigation schemes, and the conduct of insolvencies. Alys has also completed a secondment at a major accounting firm, where she gained invaluable experience and insight into the demands and pressures faced by accountancy firms.
Alys has experience of proceedings in the High Court, Commercial Court, Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court, including acting for insurers in their successful appeal to the Supreme Court in Impact Funding Solutions Limited v AIG Europe Insurance Ltd  UKSC 57. Most recently, Alys was part of the team who successfully defended insolvency practitioners at trial in a £250m claim in relation to alleged negligent failures to rescue the Company as a going concern and/or to sell its development site at appropriate value (In the matter of One Blackfriars Ltd).
In addition, Alys commonly advises primary and excess layer insurers on a range of policy issues arising under FI and D&O policies, including non-disclosure, misrepresentation, attachment and aggregation. Alys also has experience of defending claims brought against directors, including claims of unfair prejudice and has regularly acted as monitoring counsel in the context of civil proceedings and regulatory investigations involving insured clients (including private equity firms and large listed companies), in a range of different jurisdictions, most notably the US.

The appeal concerned the scope of a standard exclusion clause in solicitors’ professional indemnity insurance. By a majority of 4 to 1 the Court held that the claim by Impact Funding was excluded by the standard “trade debts” exclusion.
