London — Mayer Brown and anti-poverty charity Z2K were named the winners of the Charity Partnership-Legal category at Third Sector's 2020 Business Charity Awards in the UK.

The award recognizes a two-year, pro bono partnership between Mayer Brown's London office and Z2K to deliver the Disability Benefits Tribunal Project, which connects lawyers to low income Londoners who are in need of tribunal representation when they are denied their disability benefits.

The project was set up by Z2K in response to the growing number of requests for support that they received from people with severe medical conditions and disabilities whose benefits had been stopped by the Department for Work and Pensions. A team of 30 Mayer Brown lawyers have worked alongside Z2K to deliver the tribunal project. Over two years, the team took 25 cases to tribunal and successfully accessed £212,800.50 in financial benefits for Z2K clients.

Jim Oulton, chair of the London CSR Committee at Mayer Brown, said: “Z2K advisors and our lawyers at Mayer Brown work collaboratively to represent disabled individuals and the long-term sick at appeal to ensure that the benefits that they are entitled to are reinstated. We are both delighted to receive this prestigious award, which we hope will help to increase awareness and support for this vital program.”

The Business Charity Awards celebrate the contribution made by businesses to charities and social enterprises.
