For the second consecutive year, Legal 500 has named Mayer Brown “Team of the Year” in the “Tax Controversy” category of the publication’s Legal 500 US Awards. The awards recognize the “the very best of the best across the legal industry,” the publication said. The 2015 winners were chosen based on the research to determine the rankings for the 2015 edition of Legal 500 United States.
Legal 500 noted that Mayer Brown is “regularly seen in the most high-profile controversy cases before the US Tax Court” and produced “yet another impressive run of work” in 2014. The publication highlighted Mayer Brown’s “demonstrating its flair for transfer pricing cases” in its representation of Eaton Corporation in a US Internal Revenue Service matter.
Mayer Brown also recently announced that partners Thomas Kittle-Kamp (Chicago) and Brian Kittle (New York) had joined partner Joel Williamson (Chicago) as the co-leaders of the Tax Controversy practice.
With co-counsel, Mayer Brown represented Altera Semiconductor in its successful challenge to the IRS transfer pricing regulations requiring the sharing of equity-based compensation in cost sharing arrangements. Mr. Kittle-Kamp led the efforts of the Mayer Brown team, which was responsible for briefing and oral argument of Altera’s successful motion for summary judgment. In a 15-0 vote, the US Tax Court invalidated the equity compensation regulation. Altera is widely acknowledged as the most important tax opinion in decades.
Mr. Kittle is the youngest ever co-leader of Mayer Brown’s Tax Controversy practice. He followed his extensive trial experience in high-profile leasing cases with a leading role in the widely publicized Eaton transfer pricing case.
For Mr. Williamson, Eaton represented his unprecedented seventh mega transfer-pricing trial. He also served as one of the lead trial lawyers in the multi-billion adjustment Exelon like kind-exchange case and is preparing to try the Guidant transfer-pricing and Tyco debt-equity cases next year.
