Mayer Brown announced that partner James R. Woods (Palo Alto and New York), a co-leader of the firm’s global Insurance practice, has been named a “Serial Innovator” in The Recorder’s annual “Innovator Awards.” Mr. Woods is recognized as one of five people “with a record of figuring out new and better ways to address emerging or persistent challenges in the legal industry”—“individuals who've had a light bulb going off over their heads throughout their careers.”
The Recorder noted Mr. Woods’ use of insurance law as “a way to help people and institutions through tragic or tough situations.” Among his accomplishments, the publication cited Mr. Woods working with Office Depot’s general counsel in 2005 to organize Hurricane Katrina insurance claims relief efforts and personally running the operation out of the Houston Astrodome, where displaced policyholders found shelter. As an example of his more recent work, The Recorder noted how the 2015 Anthem health insurance data breach inspired Mr. Woods to work with network security company FireEye to create a data breach “response blueprint” insurers can follow and to run “mock breach” exercises with clients.
