WIPO Domain Name Panellists Meeting

Gabriela Kennedy, as a domain name panellist for the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), participated in the annual WIPO Domain Name Panellists Meeting (the “Meeting”), held on 23 September 2016 at the CERN Globe of Science and Innovation (the “Globe”), in Geneva, Switzerland. The Meeting, organised by the WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Centre, an international non-profit dispute resolution provider offering alternative dispute resolution options, brought together approximately 80 WIPO panellists to exchange their views on key Uniform Domain-Name Dispute-Resolution Policy (URDP) issues and emerging domain name developments.

A number of sessions and open floor discussions were held during the Meeting to explore WIPO cases of 2016, registrar lock and case settlement observations, new generic top-level domains, procedural matters, reverse domain name hijacking, Domain Name System trends and the evolution of “problem behaviour”, UDRP at the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, and the WIPO Index. Gabriela and Doug Isenberg, founder of The GigaLaw Firm, LLC, held a session to look at the use of three-member arbitration panels. The Meeting concluded with a presentation on the European Organisation for Nuclear Research or “Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire”, also known as CERN, one of the world's largest and most respected centres for scientific research and origin of the World Wide Web, followed by a tour around the Globe and a cocktail reception.

Established in 1967, WIPO is the global forum for intellectual property services, policy, information and cooperation, and is a self-funding agency of the United Nations, with 189 member states. WIPO panellists are appointed by the WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Centre to help parties in a domain name dispute select appropriately qualified panellists. WIPO panellists come from different regions of the world and are well-reputed for their impartiality, sound judgement and experience as decision-makers, as well as their substantive experience in the areas of intellectual property law, electronic commerce and the Internet. In addition to WIPO, Gabriela is also a domain name panellist for the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (HKIAC), the Asian Domain Name Dispute Resolution Centre (ADNDRC) and the Kuala Lumpur Regional Centre for Arbitration (KLRCA), where she has rendered in excess of 200 decisions, many as presiding panellist in multiple languages.
