Hai Nguyen shared his insights on trade remedies with some 40 final-year law students of the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam in Hanoi. With Vietnam amongst the 12 countries that recently concluded negotiations on the ground-breaking Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) treaty, the subject is not surprisingly of great interest.
Hai spoke on the practice of using trade remedies and the TPP’s possible implications on these remedies. He says that FTAs in general and TPP in particular will eventually eliminate the conventional trade barriers like tariff and therefore these trade pacts would promise more unconventional trade barriers such as trade remedies. He also emphasises that what TPP or similar trade pacts would offer are opportunities and not the benefits per se.
