Mayer Brown partner Robert Helman named a “Lifetime Achiever” by The American Lawyer

27 August 2015

Mayer Brown is proud to announce that Chicago partner Robert A. Helman has been named one of The American Lawyer’s 2015 “Lifetime Achievers.” The eight honorees have “had distinguished careers at some of the country’s most prominent law firms and organizations,” “provided exemplary stewardship of their firms” and “made their mark through pro bono, government or civic work,” the publication said.

Of Mr. Helman’s importance to Mayer Brown, where he has been a partner for nearly 50 years, The American Lawyer noted how Mr. Helman and his co-chairman Leo Herzel steered Mayer Brown through a challenging episode in the 1980s when the firm’s largest client, Continental Bank, was failing. Mr. Helman and Mr. Herzel responded to the crisis by expanding the firm’s client base and opening new offices, among making other changes. Mr. Helman served as Mayer Brown chairman from 1984 until 1998.

But Mr. Helman “cares about more than business,” The American Lawyer noted. “I believe lawyers have an obligation to do more than practice law and make money,” Mr. Helman told the publication. Of his many philanthropic and social contributions, he is most proud of having helped organize and having served as president of the Legal Assistance Foundation of Metropolitan Chicago. Upon his retirement as firm chairman, Mr. Helman, his wife, Janet, and Mayer Brown endowed the Mayer Brown/Robert A. Helman Professorship at Northwestern University School of Law. He also contributes to the academic community as a Lecturer in Law at the University of Chicago Law School, a position he has held for the past nine years.

“During a career spanning a half century, Robert Helman has been an integral part of Chicago and its legal community,” The American Lawyer said. (View article and Mr. Helman’s firm profile.)
