Revision to Statutory Holiday Law - Good News for Employees!

Under current legislation, Chinese New Year's Day and the day following Mid- Autumn Festival are general holidays. Should either holiday fall on a Sunday, the preceding Saturday is designated as an additional holiday. However, this does not benefit employees who have Saturday and Sunday off.

On 14 December 2011, the Legislative Council passed amendments to the Employment Ordinance and the General Holidays Ordinance to change this position. Following the introduction of the amended law (expected to take effect in 2013 at the earliest), should either of Chinese New Year's Day or the day following the Mid- Autumn Festival fall on a Sunday, then the following Monday (rather than the preceding Saturday) will be designated a statutory holiday. The next time that Chinese New Year's Day falls on a Sunday is in 2013.
