Mayer Brown’s London office has won the LawWorks Award for Best Contribution by a Law Firm, presented at a ceremony in London on June 15, 2010. LawWorks—previously known by their official title, the Solicitors Pro Bono Group—are the best known legal pro bono organization in the United Kingdom, and their three main streams of work involve referring pro bono cases, setting up advice clinics and providing training to lawyers.

Upon announcing our nomination for the award, LawWorks stated: “Mayer Brown has helped the full range of LawWorks projects this year, providing pro bono assistance through the Community Groups, Individuals Casework and Mediation Projects, in addition to advising every week at Islington Law Centre, supervising students at Kaplan Law School’s advice clinic, hosting training sessions and reviewing a fact sheet drafted by a LawWorks Choices volunteer. Pro bono clients commented on their first class, excellent and reliable service."

Numerous lawyers in the London office take part in LawWorks schemes, including the Community Groups Project—dealing with mainly transactional matters for small community groups; the Individuals Casework Project—taking largely contentious cases for needy individuals; the Clinics Project—advising weekly at Islington Law Centre and fortnightly at the Mediation Advice Clinic (which was set up jointly with LawWorks and the RCJ Advice Bureau to explain mediation to members of the public with disputes); and supervising Kaplan law students at the law school's clinic.
