The New U.S. Approach to Tackling the Problem of IT Theft which Impacts Businesses Around the Globe

3 January 2012
Mayer Brown Legal Update
Washington State and Louisiana now have specific laws making the use of stolen IT by a manufacturer an act of unfair competition, whether or not the manufactured products incorporate the stolen IT. These laws were passed in an effort to ensure a level-playing field for businesses in these states. Similar laws are being considered in other states in the U.S., including, Arizona, California, Connecticut, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, and Oregon. With Asia being the world's predominant manufacturing base, it is important for companies in the region to have a basic understanding of this new legislative development in the U.S. and the risks of liability under these new statutes.
