The Early Retiree Reinsurance Program: First Come, First Served ... Until the Money Runs Outs

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act created the Early Retiree Reinsurance Program (the "ERRP") to provide $5 billion in financial assistance to employer health plans that offer coverage to early retirees. The ERRP is intended to encourage sponsors of health plans to provide coverage to early retirees who, due to their age or chronic health conditions, often find it difficult to obtain private health care coverage before they become Medicare-eligible.
