Pro bono Project – Brussels competition team

Autumn 2010
Mayer Brown Article

The competition group of the Brussels office has been working with the Fairtrade Foundation in the UK. The Fairtrade Foundation is an independent non-profit organisation that licenses use of the FAIRTRADE Mark on products in the UK in accordance with internationally agreed Fairtrade standards. The Fairtrade Foundation contributes to sustainable development by offering better trading conditions to, and securing the rights of, marginalised producers and workers – especially in the South. The FAIRTRADE mark licensed by the Fairtrade Foundation is one of the most recognised labels indicating that the product has been certified to give a better deal to the producers involved. Fairtrade products are growing in profile especially in some product markets. The Fairtrade Foundation wished to deepen its relationship with licensees committed to its mission by supporting them. In this relation Mayer Brown advised the Fairtrade Foundation on aspects of UK and EU competition law and the possible application to its activities.
