28 July 2008
Mayer Brown Article
Charlotte associate Clark Walton planned and held a pro bono event on Saturday, July 19 in Salisbury, North Carolina for the non-profit organization Wills For Heroes ( The event brought together 35 volunteer lawyers who drafted essential estate planning documents for 130 local first responders (including police, fire and EMS) and their spouses. Using LexisNexis software developed and customized for the Wills for Heroes Foundation, the attorneys collectively were able to draft roughly 350 estate documents over the course of the day. The event was sponsored by the North Carolina Bar Young Lawyers Division and hosted by the Salisbury, NC Fire Department and Rowan County Rescue Squad. Two Salisbury firefighters were killed in the line of duty in March 2008, which led to the planning of this event. Charlotte attorneys Helen Holmberg and Leslie Wagstaff also participated in the event as document drafters. The Wills for Heroes Foundation was formed after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks by a group of attorneys to assist first responders with financial and estate planning issues.
