Steve Gates emphasizes corporate and dispute resolution matters as special counsel in Mayer Brown’s Houston office. With 30 years of executive and in-house counsel experience with multinational energy and chemical companies, he is well-versed in industry legal, compliance, regulatory and transactional matters. His corporate experience includes acquisition and financing transactions, corporate governance and strategic legal planning. He also has substantial litigation management experience and has strong credentials in alternative dispute resolution and international arbitration. He has extensive legal experience in oil and gas exploration and development, refining and marketing, pipelines, chemicals and LNG operations.  He currently serves on the Board of Directors of Methode Electronics Inc. (NYSE: MEI).

Steve rejoined Mayer Brown in 2008 after practicing with the firm in 2002-2003. In 2003-2007, he served as Senior Vice President and General Counsel of ConocoPhillips, where he was responsible for global legal, compliance and security matters, as well as corporate governance and the resolution of major disputes. His other executive assignments in the oil and gas industry include positions with FMC Corporation (Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary, 2000-2001), and BP Amoco plc, London (Executive Vice President and Group Chief of Staff, with responsibility for the planning, investor relations, press relations, brand and environmental remediation groups, 1999-2000).

With Amoco Corporation, Steve served in legal and executive positions from 1977 to 1998, the last four years as Vice President and General Counsel. In that position he was responsible for global legal affairs managing a 160-lawyer department. Earlier with Amoco he was a financial executive responsible for global financings, cash management, risk management and banking. Steve entered legal practice in 1973 with a noted Boston law firm.
