James R. Woods is a partner in Mayer Brown's Corporate & Securities practice and Global Insurance Industry Group. He has represented numerous insurers and insurance-related entities for more than 40 years across the US and globally on a wide variety of issues. He is General Counsel to both The Surplus Line Association of California and to the Worldwide Broker Network, represented over 60 insurers in California's Proposition 103 hearings, represented the Dutch Association of Insurers in connection with the creation of the International Holocaust Commission, represented the California Insurance Industry in creating the California Earthquake Authority, co-founded the Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation, and volunteered and organized Hurricane Katrina insurance claims relief efforts at the Astrodome. He also advises insurers on cyber attacks and is a member of Mayer Brown’s Cybersecurity & Data Privacy practice.
Additionally, he represents non-insurance industries, including the nation's largest trucking company in saving over $130 million related to its self-insurance workers' compensation program helping to preserve 33,000 jobs nationally. He represents private equity, hedge fund and venture capital companies in connection with various insurance investments. On a pro-bono basis, he represents the Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation and he represented the Insurance Information Institute. He also represents many e-commerce companies involved with insurance-related and social media issues and co-founded an online insurance business. James holds a seat on the National Board of the Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation. He was the Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation Honoree at the Foundation's Sixteenth Annual Western Division Gala in May 2009 where he became the only law firm partner to join an impressive group of insurance industry leaders recognized for their commitment to charitable services. James was named a “Serial Innovator” in The Recorder’s 2015 Innovator Awards.
