Peter Baumhart is a Litigation & Dispute Resolution associate in Mayer Brown’s Chicago office. He has experience briefing a wide variety of issues and motions in both state and federal courts, including:

  • A successful appellee brief defending dismissal of a lawsuit asserting state antitrust claims on behalf of indirect purchasers;
  • A successful motion to dismiss counterclaims by a derivatives-trading institution’s customer alleging breach of contract, breach of the implied covenant of good faith and fair dealing, breach of fiduciary duty, and negligence;
  • Several motions to dismiss tort claims in putative class actions alleging environmental contamination; and
  • A successful motion for attorney’s fees in a case alleging violations of the federal Administrative Procedure Act during the promulgation of a rule.

Peter has also contributed to a petition for certiorari in the U.S. Supreme Court in a case involving a criminal defendant’s Sixth Amendment right to conflict-free counsel.

Before joining Mayer Brown, Peter clerked for Judge J. Clifford Wallace of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and for Judge Jane J. Boyle of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas. Peter earned his law degree from the University of Michigan Law School, where he served as a Notes Editor for the University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform and worked in the school’s General Litigation Clinic.
