Jeff R. R. Nelson is an associate in Mayer Brown's Los Angeles office. He focuses his practice on complex civil litigation, particularly class action defense and matters involving the banking, finance, and real estate industries. Jeff also has a robust client counseling practice, providing risk assessment and advice to clients regarding labor and employment matters, including questions regarding covenants not to compete, employee benefits, and misclassification of exempt employees. In addition, Jeff has significant experience drafting employment policies and advising companies on skilled labor licensing. He represents financial institutions in wage and hour class actions involving failure to pay overtime, expense reimbursement, commission deductions, statutory pay stub requirements, termination policies, as well as disputes involving sales practices, residential mortgage-backed securities (RMBS), loan servicing practices, professional malpractice, and asset management. In his real estate litigation practice, he advises and represents lenders, institutional investors, title insurers, property owners, and developers in real property matters including leasing, eviction, foreclosure, property tax, construction, development, alleged kickback schemes, and land use entitlement disputes.

Jeff also has broad experience representing companies in the telecommunications, media, entertainment, and technology industries involving employment disputes, regulatory matters, breach of contract, and unfair business practices. Jeff has assisted multiple Fortune 500 automotive companies with internal investigations, regulatory compliance, and nationwide class action lawsuits and multidistrict litigation. Jeff also has experience defending several multi-national food and beverage clients in consumer class action false advertising and product labeling cases, as well as copyright and trademark infringement. Jeff has played a significant role in briefing motions at all stages in litigation, in both state and federal court. He also has experience drafting and responding to discovery requests, and guiding the review of electronically stored information (ESI) and fact development.

Jeff is also dedicated to pro bono projects. He has appeared in both immigration court and state court on behalf of multiple Honduran refugees and has successfully obtained legal immigration status for every client he has represented. Jeff also advises on real estate and trust matters for a charitable organization that provides smart homes for America’s wounded veterans.

Jeff graduated from the University of Southern California Gould School of Law. Prior to law school, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, Los Angeles. While at UCLA, Jeff completed a semester abroad in Madrid where he studied international law at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. He is conversant in Spanish.
