Overview

Clients turn to James Danford Jr. for his extensive experience in civil litigation in state and federal courts, mediation, arbitration, and adjudication of insurance, energy, financial, bankruptcy, and other disputes.

James advises a wide range of clients throughout the energy, banking, insurance and other industries. He has helped clients resolve disputes in a variety of civil actions, including class actions, commercial actions, insurance coverage disputes, contract disputes, breaches of fiduciary duty, bankruptcy proceedings, real estate and financial services disputes, and environmental and land use litigation.

James also advises clients on commercial transactions with a focus on insurance coverage and risk mitigation. In addition, James’ practice includes a considerable commitment to pro bono matters, including the representation of children in federal immigration matters. James is also a member of the firm’s Recruiting Committee.

Prior to joining Mayer Brown, James worked for the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on the Judiciary and the Committee on Science, Space, and Technology. His legislative experience on Capitol Hill encompassed a wide range of sectors including energy, environment, immigration, space, and research and technology. James received his JD from the Georgetown University Law Center and his BA in Political Science from Texas Tech University.

Experience

  • Obtained preliminary injunctions in several states for an industry coalition challenging the 2022 Waters of the United States Rule.
  • Represented two individuals and a financial advisory firm in litigation and arbitration arising from a merger agreement and fundraising engagement in the dental sector.
  • Represented a foreign petroleum company and assisted to obtain favorable arbitration awards in two ICDR arbitrations.
  • Secured a seven-figure money judgment for accelerated rent for an office landlord against a lease guarantor.
  • Represented a large US bank in defense of a claim that it was negligent in failing to prevent a customer’s Ponzi scheme.
  • Obtained full defense victory for affiliates of a large, international insurance company in a jury trial in Delaware Superior Court where jury found that the policyholder had committed fraud, acted in bad faith, and breached policy provisions, resulting in a take-nothing verdict.
  • Advised several large companies with respect to insurance risks associated with a merger or acquisition.
  • Advised tax equity investors and developers with respect to property, liability, cyber, and other insurance coverage for large-scale and residential solar portfolio transactions.
  • Advised a global power technology leader with, among other things, review of insurance policies of an acquisition target in a transaction valued at more than $3.5 billion.
  • Obtained dismissal of a copyright claim against the athletic fundraising organization for a large public university.
  • Represented Honduran, El Salvadorean, and Guatemalan and other minors to obtain Special Immigrant Juvenile Status and asylum on a pro bono basis.
