Overview

Friedrich Merz was a senior counsel in the Düsseldorf office of Mayer Brown until the end of 2021. He advised clients on corporate matters, M&A transactions, compliance, banking and finance. Due to his election as Chairman of the German CDU, his admission to the bar and therefore also his work at Mayer Brown are paused until further notice.

Friedrich was a member of the German Bundestag (Federal Parliament) from 1994 to 2009. From 2000 to 2002 he was Chairman and in 1998 to 2000 and 2002 to 2004 Deputy Chairman of the CDU/CSU Parliamentary Group in the Bundestag, and from 1989 to 1994 - a member of the European Parliament (MEP).
