Christine Cagnina is counsel in the Charlotte office of Mayer Brown’s State and Local Tax group and is a member of the firm’s Tax Transactions & Consulting practice.  For more than 20 years, Christine has specialized in all facets of corporate state and local tax (SALT), including income and franchise taxes, sales / use taxes, real estate transfer taxes, gross receipts taxes and commercial activity, excise and other miscellaneous taxes (i.e., Texas margin tax, Washington B&O tax).  She has a comprehensive understanding of the state and local tax issues businesses face, including the expansive economic nexus positions currently being implemented by the states.

Christine has extensive experience in multi-state tax transactional structuring and planning strategies for U.S. and foreign corporations and partnerships on acquisitions, divestitures and other restructuring transactions, in addition to the structuring of debt and private equity investment transactions. Her clients span a wide range of industries, including financial institutions, investment funds, securitizations, manufacturers, insurance, leasing, retailing and the electronic commerce industry.

Christine collaborates with Mayer Brown’s Real Estate practice, Property and Transfer Tax practice, Fund Formation & Investment Management practice, and Finance and Corporate practices, where she assists clients with SALT income, franchise, sales/use and real estate transfer tax research, planning and analysis for tax minimization strategies, including structuring and tax planning for real estate investment trusts (REITs), partnerships and limited liability companies investing in real estate and real estate-related assets.  Christine has substantial experience providing SALT structuring for real estate and private equity funds on behalf of fund sponsors, as well as structuring investments in such funds for taxable, U.S. tax exempt, sovereign wealth funds and other non-U.S. investors investing in real estate and real-estate related assets.

Christine also regularly assists clients with SALT due diligence in transactions, provides guidance with nexus determinations and implementing voluntary disclosure agreements, and counsels on general state corporate tax and tax controversy matters.
