Chad Clamage is counsel in the firm's Litigation & Dispute Resolution and Supreme Court & Appellate practices. Chad focuses his practice on class action defense and on environmental, general commercial, and consumer fraud litigation. Chad has litigated cases in courts across the country, ranging from the US Supreme Court, most federal courts of appeals, and numerous federal and state trial courts. Chad has argued before the Seventh Circuit and multiple federal and state trial courts.

In his class action practice, Chad represents clients at all stages of litigation in suits spanning from environmental and product liability cases, to securities, banking, and employment discrimination law. Chad has published articles on class action cases in the Supreme Court, is an author of the firm’s chapter on defending against class certification in securities law cases, and contributes to the firm’s flagship Supreme Court Practice and Federal Appellate Practice treatises and the firm’s Class Defense Blog.

Chad has extensive experience litigating environmental cases under the Clean Water Act, the Clean Air Act, and the Endangered Species Act. Chad has twice successfully petitioned the Supreme Court to review Clean Water Act decisions and has briefed the merits in both cases. (National Association of Manufacturers v. Army Corps of Engineers (case pending), and Decker v. NEDC, 133 S. Ct. 1326 (2013) (victory for clients).) Chad has challenged and defended EPA actions under the Clean Air Act in court and administrative proceedings and is challenging the Fish and Wildlife Service’s actions under the Endangered Species Act in the US Supreme Court.

Chad also has substantial experience defending clients against site-based mass tort class and individual actions. Chad has successfully defended a client against thousands of claims alleging injuries related to a train derailment and chemical release, and is defending clients against claims alleging contamination of drinking water.

Before joining the firm in 2009, Chad served as a law clerk to Judge Diane S. Sykes of the US Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. Prior to his clerkship, Chad received his JD with distinction from Stanford Law School and his BA with honors and distinction from Stanford University.
