Canek Acosta is an associate in the Intellectual Property practice at Mayer Brown. His practice is focused on patent litigation with a concentration on patent litigation involving computer software and electronics. Canek also has experience with trademark litigation, patent prosecution, and copyright counseling with regard to the use of open source software. Canek has also developed software to improve the practice of law, allowing for improved accuracy and efficiency in various legal and administrative tasks.

Prior to his position at Mayer Brown, Canek Acosta was an associate at another international law firm in Los Angeles where he was part of the Intellectual Property and Technology Practice Group. Canek’s work there included patent and trademark litigation, as well as pro bono immigration work in association with Kids In Need of Defense and Public Counsel.

Prior to working at that firm, Canek prosecuted patents at another international law firm. Canek’s work included drafting patent applications, responding to office actions, as well as counseling clients regarding open source software licenses. While there, Canek was seconded to Apple where he assisted the in-house patent group in managing various facets of Apple’s patent prosecution and patent licensing programs.

Prior to attending law school, Canek focused his education on artificial intelligence, encryption, and robotics through a number of graduate level courses. In addition to completing an internship at the IBM Almaden Research Facility, Canek also participated in the Intelligent Machine Design Lab at the University of Florida. In law school, Canek developed a software tool for in-depth statistical analysis of patent applications to pinpoint key factors that affect patent prosecution length as well as likelihood of allowance which was presented at the fifth annual Conference on Innovation and Communications Law.
