Mayer Brown partners Christopher Houpt and Ugo Ude named “Rising Stars” by New York Law Journal

19 June 2015

Mayer Brown announced that Litigation & Dispute Resolution partner Christopher J. Houpt and Corporate & Securities partner Ugo O. Ude (both New York) have been recognized as two of New York Law Journal’s 2015 “Rising Stars.” Selected from 300 nominations, the 50 honorees, who are 40 years old or younger, “have made an impression on their colleagues, their clients and the larger legal community” and “demonstrate the finest qualities of a good lawyer: first-rate legal skills, preparation, judgment, creativity, dedication and ethics.”

NYLJ highlighted Mr. Houpt’s contributions to Mayer Brown’s success in two major residential mortgage-backed securities litigations: writing briefs, working with financial experts and giving part of the closing argument in a state court’s approval of an $8.5 billion settlement between The Bank of New York Mellon and Bank of America and helping develop BNYM’s successful argument in the Second Circuit that the Trust Indenture Act does not apply to more than 90 percent of residential mortgage-backed securities.

As a member of Mayer Brown’s Banking and Finance Litigation group, Mr. Houpt specializes in cases involving cross-border issues; securitization, structured finance, and derivatives; and asset turnover. He is also a member of Mayer Brown's Supreme Court and Appellate practice. As an example of Mr. Houpt’s pro bono/civic activities, NYLJ noted that he wrote Second Circuit and US Supreme Court briefs for an alleged victim of police brutality.

Ugo O. Ude: “Over the course of his career, [Mr. Ude] has handled more than 40 complex transactions,” NYLJ said. In particular, the publication highlighted his work for Mayer Brown client The Jordan Company, advising the private equity firm on the formation of its $3.2 billion Resolute III fund and on the sale of its Pro Mach Inc. packaging equipment company. The publication also noted Mr. Ude’s work advising The Dow Chemical Company in its sale of AgroFresh and his representation of Vidara Therapeutics International Ltd. in its $660 million acquisition by Horizon Pharma, Inc. A partner in Mayer Brown’s Corporate & Securities practice, Mr. Ude represents private equity funds, other financial investors, strategic investors and portfolio companies and multinational companies in merger and acquisition transactions, restructurings, joint ventures and general transactional and corporate governance matters. He also represents sponsors with respect to the formation of private equity funds and issuers and underwriters in public and private offerings of equity and debt securities.

Among Mr. Ude’s civic/pro bono activities, NYLJ noted his participation in Mayer Brown’s diversity and inclusion initiatives, his work for pro bono clients such as Sharon Baptist Church in the Bronx and his involvement in fundraising activities for poor communities in his native Nigeria.
