National Law Journal names Mayer Brown “Chicago Litigation Department of the Year: Mass Torts/Class Actions”

25 August 2014

Mayer Brown, a leading global law firm, has been named by The National Law Journal (NLJ) as the “Chicago Litigation Department of the Year: Mass Torts/Class Actions.” In its special report, the NLJ’s editorial team evaluated Chicago-based litigation practices on several criteria including notable wins, operations, headcounts and revenues. “We are thrilled to be recognized by The National Law Journal for excellence based on our litigation capabilities, especially in the mass torts and class actions arenas, and take great pride in this recognition,” said Frederick Thomas, partner-in-charge of the Chicago office.

The NLJ cited Mayer Brown’s success “attacking each suit differently, finding and exploiting vulnerabilities in jurisdiction, standing, experts or facts.” The publication pointed to the firm’s ability to “draw from a deep bench including technical specialists who work together to craft a defense.”

In its overview of Mayer Brown’s accomplishments, the NLJ highlighted recent class action victories led by Chicago-based lawyers:

  • A double victory for AT&T Inc. in two consumer class actions involving late-payment charges when an Illinois state court dismissed one suit for lack of evidence and the other for lack of jurisdiction;
  • A win for auditor Moore Stephens Associated Ltd. of Hong Kong in a securities class action when a New York City federal court found no material factual dispute to present to a jury and granted summary judgment on all claims to Moore Stephens; and
  • A win for CitiMortgage Inc. in a multidistrict litigation stemming from the federal government’s Home Affordable Modification Program when a California federal court refused to certify eight classes of 40,000 homeowners.

The publication also noted Mayer Brown’s products liability case wins, including its summary judgment verdicts in Minnesota federal court for St. Jude Medical Inc. in three pending products liability suits alleging defects in Riata defibrillator leads.

According to Andy Marovitz, co-leader of the global Litigation & Dispute Resolution practice, “The broad range of skills, depth of legal acumen and diversity of experience differentiate Mayer Brown from its competitors. It’s a tremendous honor for our litigation group to be recognized for its ability to take on any type of matter and achieve success for clients facing complex litigation and serious business challenges in a variety of jurisdictions.”
